Can ChatGPT watch videos? What it can and can't do

Short answer

No. ChatGPT can't play a video from a link, so it can't hear what's said in a YouTube video or a TikTok; it guesses from the title and description. Give it the transcript and it can summarize, quote and answer questions about any video. Claude can't watch videos either. Google's Gemini app can summarize many YouTube videos from a link, using their captions.

ChatGPT doesn’t play videos. When you paste a link, the most it can do is read the page around the video: the title, the description, sometimes a few comments. Then it fills the gaps. People on OpenAI’s own forum have been saying so for years; one put it simply: with a YouTube link it “just guesses the video”.

That’s why AI summaries of long videos often sound plausible and miss the point. They’re built from the packaging, not from what was said.

Why it can’t

There are two reasons, and they stack.

  • A video isn’t text. What’s said lives in the audio. ChatGPT reads pages; it doesn’t sit and listen to a 40-minute stream.
  • Many video sites keep AI out. TikTok, Instagram and Facebook ask ChatGPT and Claude, by name or with an allow-list, not to read their pages. When we checked 52 major sites in October 2026, 17 of them asked ChatGPT or Claude to stay out.

What ChatGPT can do with a video

  • Work with a transcript. Give it the words and it’s excellent: summaries, quotes, steps, translations, answers with timestamps.
  • Describe screenshots. Upload a frame and it can tell you what’s on screen.
  • Read the title and description. Useful for context, useless for what was actually said.

Can Claude watch videos?

No. Claude can’t play a video from a link either. Like ChatGPT, it’s very good once it has the transcript, and it works with any video’s text the same way.

Can Gemini watch YouTube videos?

Google’s Gemini app can summarize many YouTube videos from a link, because it can use the captions YouTube already has. It’s limited to YouTube, and to videos that have captions. It won’t help with a TikTok, an Instagram Reel or a video without captions.

How to get ChatGPT to “watch” a video

  1. Copy the transcript by hand. On a computer, open the YouTube video, click …more, then Show transcript. Select it, copy it and paste it into ChatGPT. Long videos may need pasting in parts. This doesn’t work for TikTok, which has no transcript view.
  2. Use a transcript tool, then paste the text in. Fine for one video; tedious for ten.
  3. Connect Puley. Paste a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link into ChatGPT or Claude and Puley fetches the transcript, the views and the comments first, so the answer comes from the video, not the title.

What to ask once it has the transcript

  • “Summarize this in five points with timestamps.”
  • “What did they say about pricing?”
  • “Turn the steps into a checklist.”
  • “What’s the hook in the first ten seconds, and why does it work?”
  • “Translate this into Spanish.”

Ask about a two-hour video and get the answer in seconds. Puley does it inside ChatGPT and Claude.

Questions

Can ChatGPT watch YouTube videos?

Not from a link. It can't play the video or reliably read its captions, so it answers from the title and description. Paste the transcript, or connect an add-on that fetches it, and it works with what was actually said.

Can ChatGPT watch TikTok videos?

No. TikTok asks AI assistants, ChatGPT included, to stay out of its pages, and ChatGPT can't play the video anyway. It needs the transcript.

Can Claude watch videos?

No. Claude can't play a video from a link either. Give it the transcript and it can summarize, quote and answer questions about the video.

Can ChatGPT see what's on screen in a video?

Not from a link. Take screenshots of the moments you care about and upload them; ChatGPT can describe images.

How do I get ChatGPT to understand a video?

Give it the transcript. On a computer, copy it from YouTube's Show transcript panel and paste it in, or connect Puley, which fetches the transcript of any YouTube, TikTok or Instagram video when you paste the link.
