Can Claude understand a YouTube video?

Short answer

Claude can analyse text or images supplied from a YouTube video. Its current file-upload guide lists document and image formats. A video link alone does not establish that all its speech or frames were retrieved. Provide a transcript or relevant images and ask questions that match that evidence. Checked 10 October 2026.

Distinguish speech from pictures

Ask a question that matches the material. A text transcript can support a summary of what someone said; it cannot independently establish gestures, scene changes or on-screen text that never appears in that transcript. For those questions, supply suitable images and their context.

Claude’s upload documentation and account features can change. Check the formats available in your own interface instead of assuming an arbitrary video file will work everywhere.

Use a public transcript in Claude

  1. Retrieve the transcript through Puley’s public-video tool when the source is accessible.
  2. Read the result and verify important wording against the original.
  3. Copy it into Claude or use a permitted custom connection.

Make clear whether the text covers the whole video, only captions or a limited returned segment.

For a quotation, check the original wording. Missing captions, access refusals and unclear speech should stay visible as limitations rather than being filled with a plausible sentence.

How to get told when the guidance changes

If Puley can read the public help page linked here, a page-change watch can alert you after a successful check observes an update. Free includes one daily watch. Reopen the official guide before acting: a page change does not establish which features your own account has received.
